This is My Sign

butterfly-signI originally wrote this for Looking Glass Lane on “Show-n-Tell” Wednesday in the clubhouse… and wanted to share it with you, my My Mommy Manual friends. As Zen Mommy, dubbed Terra Firma Esoteric by Leigh and the other Looking Glass girls, I thought this, my first show-n-tell would be on something that gives me peace.

This show actually also has a bit of truth-or-dare in it as well! The truth is, what gives me peace, what I brought with me to the Clubhouse to show you… are signs. Yes signs. I’m talking about the kind of signs you get in life from the universe when you are in need of direction, affirmation or just a big cosmic hug.

So my show-n-tell today is a picture of the most recent sign I’ve received. It came to me in a way and on a day when I really needed it. It’s a double-headed daisy. You may already understand the significance this flower has for me. The short of it is this: I found this flower the day I discovered I was pregnant with twins, one stalk joining two perfectly formed and beautiful yellow daisy centers, white petals all around.

This flower came to me just when I needed it. I saw it, and in that moment I knew it was a sign for me. My double-headed daisy gave (and continues to give) me peace—confirmation that I am a part of something larger than just myself.

Now maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “Yeah, that’s a nice coincidence for sure, but a sign?” Seem a little far-fetched or maybe even a little bit childish to believe? Well I hope so! That is what this Clubhouse is all about. Childish things!!! Re-capturing the magic and innocence of childhood. And happily, for me, believing is one of those things I NEVER outgrew.

Signs. I ask for them, I watch for them and then I smile, giggle and jump up and down (like any 6- year-old would) when life delivers them. And life does deliver them, on a regular basis in fact.

If you are out of practice or just plain don’t even believe in signs, join me this week. Let’s do it just for the fun-of-it…for the jump-down-the-rabbit-hole-Looking-Glass-Lane of it… and see what happens. You might just be surprised what happens when you do! Here’s all you have to do:

1. Ask for clarity in a specific area of your life…the clearer the better. It can help to write your question down. Examples: Is this the right guy for me? Does leaving my job and going out on my own make practical sense right now? Can I take that trip to Italy with my new husband that I have been dreaming of my whole life?

2. Next, simply ask for the eyes to see, the ears to hear and the heart to believe. Then watch for it. That’s all there is to it.

But don’t be fooled by the apparent ease of step two. This is a biggie…especially if you’ve forgotten how to believe. I know a woman, a friend of a friend, who sadly has forgotten how to believe. She’ll occasionally see the people in her life getting signs they ask for, so she will ask for a sign. Then, about a week later, in an “I told you so” sort of manner, she’ll declare either signs are not real or they just don’t ever happen to her.

Oh really? This is the same woman who after her Dad died asked for a sign from him about a year after his death. She went camping that weekend with a friend. On her return, when my friend asked how the trip was, she declared, “Great, except this weird butterfly was bugging me the entire time. It landed on my shoulder and would not leave me alone.” They had even taken pictures of it. You could see how this big, beautiful butterfly had stayed with her, even when she had moved all around the campsite. She had even gone in and out of her tent and the butterfly would not go away. And as my friend marveled at the photos, this non-believer said the funniest thing. ”I finally started shooo-ing it off. It wasn’t easy to make it go away.” But eventually, she was successful. She made the butterfly go away.

HMMMMMM. Your dad dies and you ask for a sign. Your dad loved butterflies. A butterfly lands on you and won’t leave?!?! You’ve just asked for a sign from your dad the day before? You shooo away the butterfly and raise your hands in frustration a week later, because signs just don’t happen to you.

My friends friend it right. Signs aren’t real. They don’t happen. At least not unless you have the eyes to see, the ears to hear and the heart to believe! So step two is pretty important. But that is what Looking Glass Lane is all about. BELIEVING…and you don’t have to do it alone. We believe too.

When did you need a sign and life delivered? What is going on for you right NOW, right in this moment, where you could use some direction? Ask for a sign. Watch for a sign. Write in the comment section about an area in your life where you could use a sign. We believe you’ll get the sign you are looking for…do you?
