Week 33: Blessingways and Birth

img_0467 (2)When Ria (aka Practical Mommy) offered to throw me a Baby Shower, as a to be third and fourth time mom expecting twins, I realized how special this was. Most moms get one go at the whole baby shower thing. I was lucky. I was getting a second go at it… and I wanted it to be special.

More than gifts and yummy food, (which i ain’t knocking ’cause they were great!) I wanted a day surrounded by the mothers and sisters in my life to celebrate the life (x2) I carry inside me. I wanted a day to dream with these amazing women about the day our babies will make their way into this world and into my arms. This is exactly what I got.

My Baby Shower included a Blessingway [Read more…]

Week 32: Other New Moms & Icing

icingThis week I am reminded that there is nothing like the support of other new moms when you are expecting. I have called three different new mom friends on three different topics in the past week as we near B (birth) day next month and they have been SO helpful. I have also been on I don’t know how many sites to read reviews from other moms on everything from car seats to crib pads. Not to seem materialistic, but the last couple months of pregnancy seem to be full of all the last minute “material” purchases. I keep reminding myself that all I REALLY need are my girls (my breasts, not my daughters, though they will be helpful too!) blankets, burp clothes and diapers. The rest is just icing on the cake.

Icing on the Cake

Just icing, yes, but I for one like icing. So here is some of the sweeter tips my new mom friends have shared with me [Read more…]

Week 31: Newborn Baby Checklists

listI am making my list and checking it twice. It’s been almost seven years since I’ve brought a newborn home from the hospital and I am definitely suffering from some sort of mommy amnesia when it comes to remembering what I’ll need to have on hand. If you too are suffering from this rare disease or if perhaps it is your first time welcoming home a baby, let me enlighten you on what I’ve found. Here are are a few Newborn Checklists to help you prepare: [Read more…]

Zen Mommy Minute: Duality

Zen Mommy Minute question of the week: Do you want a good, dutiful, well-behaved, grateful, respectful child? This video might have you think twice about this as a parenting “goal”… or at least I hope it will.

Duality. What are we teaching our children when the end goal of our parenting approach is to have a “good” child? Does it lead to excessive rigidity? Does it help our children learn to accept and manage the many emotions they feel? And finally, does it help our children come to know and love themselves? Please send me your thoughts. To read more on this, check out one of my favorite parenting reads, Alice Miller’s “For Your Own Good”. [Read more…]

Week 30: Sage “New-Mom” Advice from a Friend

mom cleaning toiletI can explain the toilet picture that accompanies this post, I promise. Let me back up. This week I went to lunch with a friend. Molly is not just any friend; she has the distinction of being my sole-close-mom-friend raising MULTIPLES. Molly is the proud and loving mother of triplets, one boy and two girls now six years old. With our twins just 2 months from arriving, coupled with my propensity for seeking advice from other moms (can you say “MyMommyManual”?!?!) you can imagine how eager I was to pick her brain over salad and some tasty St. Louis style toasted raviolis.

About ten minutes into lunch it became clear to me – I needed to take notes. Too many pearls of wisdom were falling from her mouth to risk missing even one, so out came my iphone with it’s “notes” application and this is what I captured:

  1. No One Gets in the Door Who Wouldn’t Scrub Your Toilet: This was by far my favorite. She told me [Read more…]
