A Mom Is Born

We partnered with KMOV to co-host A Mom Is Born: The Virtual Baby Shower Celebrating a Woman’s Journey into Motherhood to benefit theMarch of Dimes and to show how women can transition into motherhood with the support of friends and family.

Our 2010 celebrant is expecting mom Virginia Kerr, the anchor on Channel 4’s early news show, Awake.

We hosted a Holding Hands Ceremony (featured in the video above) in which we personalized a Holding Hands bracelet for Virginia. Villa Design created a signature bead and bracelet for us as a symbol of the connectedness between all mothers and the strength moms can source from each other. The bracelet is an especially touching gift for an expecting mom to wear during her labor and delivery, as a reminder of the support she has from her closest women friends — who were invited to add their own Pandora-style bead and an accompanying wish.

A limited number of Holding Hands bracelets with one-of-a-kind glass beads were handmade by artist, Melissa Villadiego for this event for guests to buy for a special mom or mom-to-be. Through August 31, a portion of the proceeds will go to the March of Dimes.

Top tips for new moms were shared, which are being collected in exchange for an entry in the Mom is Born giveaway raffle. Raffle prizes have been generously donated by the shower sponsors.

How can you support March of Dimes through this event?
• Make a donation via the DONATE button below
• Buy a Holding Hands bracelet for yourself or a loved one
• Support A Mom Is Born sponsors

You can watch the recordings below to hang out with us and Virginia. Any mom will enjoy the event because the two-hour broadcast featured great parenting tips and products.

  1. Congrats Virginia!

My advice to you if you are going to try and breastfeed is to pump, pump, pump. I was determined to nurse for the entire first year…needless to say I only lasted for 6.5 months. All the literature I read said to try and pump 2 weeks before heading back to work. So I did. But that wasn’t enough. With my next child, I will be pumping the day I return home from the hospital. The more you pump and nurse, the longer your supply will last and the more ounces you will be able to produce. When storing the milk, use ice cube trays. That way when its time for your child’s feeding session while away from you, the guardian can pop out one (or two or as many as needed) and none of the “liquid gold” is wasted since you can dictate how much your baby needs. This way, you aren’t wasting leftover milk from your 6oz bag. Each ice cube is approximately 1-2 oz so you can add more cubes to your child’s feedings as they can eat more.

Whatever you choose to do it will be great, whether it be nurse or bottle-feed as long as you love your baby unconditionally!

  2. Lori Brady says:

Virginia, this shower seems cool for you guys. Congrats to you and Jason.
Little boys and their mommies are a special bond that never seems to be broken. My first born was a son as well and keeping the whole big picture of life in balance is the most important. Having a baby is a life changing event. But as my husband has always said.. IT is so worth it!!!!! PS I like pampers diapers!!
    Congrats Lori B

  3. Lori Brady says:

One more tip….. Dad needs to understand when he is watching the baby it is NOT babysitting……….it IS Parenting!

  4. Maria Pattengill says:

I am a soon to be first-time mommy and if there’s anything that I’ve learned so far it’s…DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF!

  5. Loving the virtual baby shower! We love the March of Dimes and know how valuable all this information is!

  6. If you nurse, pump sometimes so dad can feed and have that bonding time. It’s just as important for him as it is for you. Plus it gives you a break.

  7. For picture taking, don’t forget to take pics with YOU in it! When they grow up, they love seeing what you looked like then, too.

  8. Lori Brady says:

Nothing was more fun for me than throughout the day when just being home alone with the baby and we would have fun little photosessions.

  9. Create a calm, quiet, comfortable environment in the bedroom…have a routine and do it every time…and a night light is a great thing to have too.

  10. Don’t be afraid to let the baby cry a little. It’s okay. The biggest thing is to remember that Sleep Begets Sleep! The book “Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child,” was our Bible. It gave us so much insight into the sleep cycles of our kids!

  11. I won a prize a few minutes ago. I was trying to contact you through the chat with no success. If I won the picture session, unfortunately I can’t accept. I live in Philly. I just know Virginia through watching football games together when I lived at Scott AFB in IL. That’s how I knew about this shower.
If you want to draw for this prize again, feel free to put in back in the “hat.” Thanks so much, but someone else could use it when I can’t.

  12. Emily- we will give you the Build a Bear certificate instead! will redrawn the photography prize. THANK YOU!

  13. I’m pregnant with number 5. I’m so thankful to have my babies. My favorite part of motherhood is the time I spend staring into my children’s sweet faces. Slow down and enjoy your baby. There is nothing in the world like the feeling that bursts out of your chest when you have your own.

  14. Lori Brady says:

TIP- takes more pics than you can ever imagine! you will never regret it- STL

  15. My new tip is to wear your baby…helps with bonding, and gives a little extra weight to your everyday activities to lose weight faster!

    I’m in St. Louis!

  16. One more comment on photography! Get great pictures taken! I know it costs money, but you wil NEVER regret the money spent!

  17. i love this community, so wise and witty. late to the show today but i’d second those who suggested to live more simply. slow down, be present, listen…and give yourself a break. we’ve found that laughter is contagious (even when you think you can’t possibly muster it up). thanks, ladies for this lovely space and support.
