So many different things we need to do to keep our kids safe. Thank you so much for an excellent guide on such an important subject. I never thought I'd have to start the conversation with an 8-year old, but it happened. Good to have some great ideas to help me in what will be, probably, another 10 years of conversations!

Dita,
As you say, knowing your resources ahead of time is essential. I'm taking your advice and attempting to collect them before they are needed. They offer peace-of-mind as well and simply operating from a confident place makes things more likely to be handled in the best way possible. Thank you for sharing from your vantage point of success. Much appreciated!

Very well said. I have gone through it. I think the most important thing is to be open . Listening to my child helpme understandwhere she is. Being pro active, having the resources in my hand ahead of time helped.

It was important for her to know our values. It was important for me to know her surrounding and school culture.

Open communication was the answer for us. Thanks for your post.

Wonderful information. I have a 12 year old and the conversations we've had have all been in the car or begin after watching a movie with an 'adult situations' rating. Being in the moment, answering honestly and with respect are key. I have seen too many parents make flippant remarks and never notice the 'teaching' moment. I look forward to future conversations, and to reading some of the recommended resources....OK, that's a lie....I look forward to future conversations, and bite my lip with some worry, that I'll find the backbone to be the Mom my son needs me to be. :)
