Zen Mommy Minute: Beautiful Boundaries

March 9, 2010 by Zen Mommy · 1 Comment

No, I do not have a twin. I just wanted to show you one of my favorite pieces of art which we happen to have hung by a rather large mirror. What I wanted to show you is how this piece of art reminds me of my “boundaries”.

Boundaries (in art and in life) are a beautiful thing. They give structure and form when they are present and can be sorely missed when they are not. Listen to this short video for more on the topic of parenting and boundaries.

What are some of your biggest challenges in the area of boundaries and parenting? Mine is Read more

Zen Mommy Minute: Share your Dreams

January 18, 2010 by Zen Mommy · Leave a Comment

We all have dreams… every one of us. As a parent, have you ever thought about the importance of your child’s dreams and what they might be saying? Start by remembering your own dreams and sharing them with your kids. They will naturally begin to share theirs with you.

Hearing that your 6 year old was chased by a blue witch who wanted to steal their homework might just give you a little insight into what’s going on in her waking day. Is she anxious or worried about something? Having a good Dream Dictionary on hand can be a big help as well. Let me know if you are already talking about dreams with your children. And if you are just starting, what have you learned? Read more

Zen Mommy Minute: Cool Smoothies – connecting with our kids

January 11, 2010 by Zen Mommy · Leave a Comment

Cool smoothies. They’re YUM and nutritious… hence the perfect after school treat for you and your child of just about any age to make together. Here’s a great recipe with pineapple, lime… and yes kids, a scoop of ice cream. :)

Tell me about your kitchen adventures. Do your kids like to make up their own recipes as much as mine? (whose latest creations,  “Reindeer Peanut Butter Snacks”, were left out Christmas eve with a copy of the recipe so Mrs. Claus could make more of them once Rudolph and the gang got back to the North Pole.)

Zen Mommy Minute: Duality

December 14, 2009 by Zen Mommy · 3 Comments

Zen Mommy Minute question of the week: Do you want a good, dutiful, well-behaved, grateful, respectful child? This video might have you think twice about this as a parenting “goal”… or at least I hope it will.

Duality. What are we teaching our children when the end goal of our parenting approach is to have a “good” child? Does it lead to excessive rigidity? Does it help our children learn to accept and manage the many emotions they feel? And finally, does it help our children come to know and love themselves? Please send me your thoughts. To read more on this, check out one of my favorite parenting reads, Alice Miller’s “For Your Own Good”. Read more

November 16, 2009 by Zen Mommy · Leave a Comment

I can hear Popeye now “I Yam what I Yam…”. Parent or not, this week, let’s embrace the “I” that is our “true-self”. Let’s allow the things we do with our kids during the day, at their schools, etc.. to flow from these innate parts of our personalities…

not from only a sense of duty or obligation. Our children will see us in our bliss and learn that they too can love who they are and use their gifts on a daily basis to make a difference in the world.

Let’s parent in a way that is in line with Read more
