This may sound superficial but what I find unique about this last week of pregnancy is the fun I’m having dressing-up the bump. 23 weeks along is just a fun size to be… big enough that you are obviously pregnant but not so big that you are uncomfortable 24/7. But at the rate my waistline seems to be expanding these days, I’m not sure how long the glory days of playing baby bump dress-up will last. If I stared at my belly long enough, I’m certain I would see it expanding right before my very eyes. At least that’s how it feels.
Turns out science supports the way I am feeling (about the rapid belly growth anyway, not the fun of bump dress-up.) Our babies are now nearly a full foot long and a pound each, but in the next seven days of development, they are set to put on an average of 1/3 pound EACH. As baby’s fat production goes into overdrive right about now, I can expect our little peanuts to double their weight in the next four weeks alone.
The two other cool things I read about happening for our babies week 23 are that the bones in the middle ear are beginning to harden and the pigment that colors their skin is being deposited. Pretty cool stuff, but nothing compares to the rapid growth/baby fat thing for me. I find this fascinating. Think about it… DOUBLING your weight in one short month. So say you were 130 pounds now, that would put you at 260 by Thanksgiving. Wow-za! It’s also very comforting to know that because of all this rapid weight gain and other cool things happening, in just three weeks baby’s rate of survival jumps to around 85 percent if born prematurely.
I for one am enjoying the swelling of my belly as I am still comfortable in my body (knock on wood) and if nothing else, I now have a nice place to rest my hands whether I’m sitting or standing. If you are pregnant, give me a belly-bump update! Let me know how far along you are, how you are feeling these days…. and if you are having fun dressing-up the bump too.
P.S.: We’re a week away form our next ultrasound (next Thursday) so I’ll most likely have pictures to share of our sweet baby girl and boy very soon.
