29 Weeks: Baby Got Cheeks

I saw Skittles yesterday! Guess what! Those choroid plexus cysts on his brain are shrinking so the doctor’s not worried about him having down’s syndrome and he has big ole cheeks like mine!

The kind of cheeks Santa Claus has in pictures with rosy highlights. He also weighs three pounds!

Here he is!

See the Kerr cheeks on my sister and me..the nose too!

And it is official. Virginia Kerr has hit nesting mode! My clean freak husband will be excited! I just scrubbed all the toilets last night for no reason.  I am decluttering the kitchen.  I even made matching homemade magnets for our refrigerator so it looks more uniform.

They look like these.

They are part of my french country themed kitchen that I have my husband creating. Thank goodness he agrees the kitchen redo must me finished before baby gets here.

This weekend I am washing baby clothes and looking for some of the must have baby med items.

I know I have 10 weeks but you just never know.

Meanwhile, I hope you can make it to my virtual baby shower on August 25th. I didn’t even know what a virtual shower was until I met Practical Mommy and Zen Mommy. This shower is really about you and premature babies, not me.

All you have to do is watch it live online from 11 to 1 that Wednesday, send me new mom parenting tips and you can win some amazing products for YOUR baby. The whole event is a fundraiser for the March of Dimes.

Plus, you can get a Holding Hands bracelet.

This is so cool! These are bracelets you give to moms and moms to be in your life. You add beads to them and each bead is from someone close to the person receiving the bracelet.  I know I am going to wear mine while I am in labor so I can take the support and memories of each woman represented on the bracelet.  If you buy a bracelet or charm during the shower, you will be supporting the March of Dimes.

I hope that all makes sense. If not I have a link below that explains it all.

I have to go clean out a closet now…I’ll talk to you soon!

28 Weeks: Third Trimester Begins!

Holy Cow! I have less than three months to go. This has been smooth sailing until now. I went to the doctor Monday because I feel faint multiple times a day. Took the gestational diabetes test but still don’t have the results. Today I am meeting with a diabetes specialist. I’m going to learn how to take blood samples through out the day so they can figure out if that’s what it is.

But here’s the thing. Now I think it isn’t sugar that’s causing it but how I am sitting.

I feel the worst when I am in my car or at my work desk. I think the cushioning in the chair or the crease at the bottom of my stomach when I sit may be cutting off my blood circulation.  Is that possible? So now I am typing with the keyboard in my lap, leaned back in a hard folding chair. But I still feel like I’m gong to pass out.  I have to get up every three minutes to prevent it.

I go back to see Skittles and show the doc my blood sugar results next week.

Oh yeah! Bama Mama came to town for the shower.

I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if she moved here one day to be close to the baby.  She actually learned how to knit just so she could make a blanket and hat for Skittles!  Because of her, my mother in law and sister in law, I feel so blessed and taken care of.

They are so generous and supportive. If I didn’t have them, I would be freaking out about this baby!

Speaking of my sister in law. Christy is doing way better than expected.  Her doctors say the parasitic twin is shrinking and doesn’t appear to be taking any blood from the baby. Remember, they thought they were going to have to preform emergency surgery to separate them at 23 weeks and then take the baby around 25 weeks. Now we are on week 28 and they say she could carry the baby until 36 weeks! Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers.

Off to the diabetes doctor…I’ll let you know what happens.

How to Have the Heart Grow Fonder

Husband and I may have started a tradition that could be considered a bit unconventional, but it works for me.  I say “may have” because this is only the second year of taking separate vacations with the kids.  (As in, I fly solo with the kids on a vacation.  Then he flies solo with the kids on vacation.)  I don’t know how long we’ll do this — it would be nice to eventually have a family vacation– but for now it works and so far, so good.

Last year, Lola (my BFF) and I took our four boys (aged 10-1) on a weeklong road trip/vacation to visit my Mom & Dad in Durango, Colorado.  It was a lot of craziness, dancing on the brink of insanity, yet we had a great time and made wonderful memories together.

This year, I took my boys (now 5 and 2) on a 13-day road trip/vacation again to Colorado.  First, to visit my brother and his family in Castle Rock and then to visit my parents, where on the last weekend, we held our biennial Davis Family Reunion.  My Mom & I had been planning this event for months and upon my arrival we were getting down to the nitty gritty of activities, games and meals for 30 people mostly from Texas (where we’re all originally from), but now spread out through California, Colorado and North Carolina.

BigBoy's arm around his little brother

I wrote about the road trip through Utah with the boys on my blog (and here) and overall I’m surprised about the number of comments that I received from people shocked that I would drive them solo for two days.  I’m not exactly sure how to respond to their disbelief.  [Read more…]

How and When to Start Parenting

I recently met with Dr. Becky Brittain, Ph.D. also known as The Mothering Coach. She is a wealth of information but specifically expert in Perinatal and Prenatal Psychology, the focus of her doctorate. Not only does she have all those fancy letters after her name but she is truly a joy to be with. I’ve seen her in action with kids and the connection that she can create with them is admirable.

Did you know that, moms-to-be? Yes, stress does affect your baby. Mother yourself! Being gentle and loving to yourself is a wonderful way to start parenting! [Read more…]

How to Ride a Bike with No Training Wheels

I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to celebrate a big milestone in the life of one of our small friends, Lucca! He is an inspiration, isn’t he? And a reminder of those squeezable moments of childhood — of our kids and our own! This is one of those moments when we connect with our kids, not just as parents but as the child within us!

Do you remember the first time you rode a bike without training wheels? Tell us about it! [Read more…]

How to Make a Pomodoro Sauce: Easy, Versatile, Practical

Ever since a trip to Italy years ago, I’ve been in search of the perfect Pomodoro. It’s a fabulous summer recipe, light and healthy. After many years, I’m proud and happy to say, I just made it up myself! Thus, it is super easy!

8 roma tomatoes
2 tbs. of olive oil
basil (fresh or freeze dried)
olive oil spray
1/2 cup of fresh grated parmesan cheese
mozarella (optional)
salt to taste

First, place the tomatoes in the broiler, sprayed with olive oil, and sprinkled with a bit of salt and basil. Broil until tender (10-15 minutes).

Cool.
Mash.
Add parmesan cheese.
Add 2 tbs. of olive oil
Mix.

That’s it! Pour on pasta and top with fresh mozarella!

I’ve already made it twice this week and my 6 year old loved it. Here’s another tip: make a whole pot of it and keep adding stuff. Great options: roasted vegetables like zucchinis and mushrooms, meat, eggplant, bacon. The possibilities are endless.

I also used it to make bruschettas for lunch one day. How’s that for practical.
The secret was the cheese — which I didn’t realize until I re-created my grandmother’s famous bolognese sauce.

27 Weeks: Passing Out at Work

I didn’t pass out but I almost did! Three times today! I started feeling really lightheaded in the car this morning at 2:30, then it got worse when I got to my desk.

I took off my panty hose because I thought that was the problem…By the way I was laughed at when a girl at work heard I still wear panty hose. Not because I am pregnant but because they are “sooooo out.” Whatever, I wear the black tights under black pants only.

Anyway, that didn’t work, then I unbuttoned my pants…I thought I was cutting off the blood circulation. Nope. Still about to fall over. I managed to get through the show but it was rough.  So at 7 I ran over to my mom to be mentor Afton (KMOV web producer) to ask what the deal was.

DEHYDRATION.

She said she ended up in the hospital because of it when she was pregnant with her first child.  It’s now 10:15, I’ve had three bottles of water and I feel better but still not quite right.

I just read pregnant women are supposed to drink at least 8 ounces of water an hour! Holy Pee Breaks Batman! Seriously???

I will drink more but I’m still wearing panty hose with my black pants! I hate that flash of flesh that breaks up the black flow from the pants to the heels.  Know what I mean?

Here’s Afton and my video blog about the mini crisis this morning.
