How to See Gifts in All Experiences

hidden_gifts1I was totally inspired by this post from Scott Noelle. If you don’t subscribe to his Daily Groove, I’d highly recommend it. It sets a great tone for my day:

“Perfectionistic parenting is rooted in the false idea that it’s bad to make a mistake or fall short of one’s expectations.

But if you think about it, you can derive value from any experience — no matter how “bad” it is or how much pain it involves — IF you’re willing to look for the hidden gifts.

The hidden gift is like your child’s invisible friend. [Read more…]

15 Weeks: Baby Name Game

twinsLots of information on the wed on pregnancy… and they’re RIGHT. I feel like a million bucks compaed to only a week or so ago. The fog of the first trimester settling in phase has lifted, the energy is returning and I feel more like myself again.

My round ligaments are even stretching as predidcted by one or more sites as evident with the lower right abdominal achiness. Just startign to wonder this morning actually when I read this is normal as the ligaments are stretching. Cool.

On the fun side, we are full-on into the Baby Naming Game. (For one of my leading girl names, click this here.) If there is ever a dull moment (or one where I think our kids might be close to physically hurting one another) I know I can rely on the baby name topic to bring some good cheer. My girls have there favorites and lucky for me most of them jibe with MY favorite’s. How much of this is actually due to them hearing them from me? I don’t know… but I have to say, it is not so for my hubby who came bounding down the stairs this weekend to announce his two new favorite twin names (truly inspired as they had come to him in the shower) only to meet much resistance on the kiddo front. Nothing like a subtle, “I don’t LIKE that” to kill the joy.

At any rate, I have a feeling this baby naming thing may be a little more involved this go around, if not only for the peanut gallery weighing in… for the fact that now there are two. Not only do we have to consider how they sound side by side, we have our two girls names to stay in time with as well. Here’s a link I like on baby name ideas because you actually don’t need to give your email address to see the list. DANG. Took me a ga-jillion sites to find one that didn’t demand to know my due date…

Yes, these truly are the sort of stream of thoughts that go through the 15 weeks pregnant mind. Wish it were alot deeper, but alas… I am thnking of stretching ligaments and naming babies. 😉 Next week, we plan to find out the sex of the babies… and THAT will serve to move the baby name game right along, if no ones to shy for a conclusive babies sex naming picture in there! 😉

How to Get Your Preschooler Ready

Recently, I was on Great Day St. Louis doing a segment on “Back to Preschool.” Host, Matt Chambers and I talked about how to prep your kids for their first time out of the nest (sniff)!

If your toddler is heading to preschool for the first time this fall, it’s a big step for the whole family. Your “baby,” will fare better if you can equip her with some things to ease the transition. Think BOTH confidence-building and security. Here are some tips:

• Get her excited about the big step by getting her involved in picking out her preschool gear. Appropriately-sized and designed backpacks will allow her to take responsibility for her things and take pride in the fact that she can carry it herself. If she has older siblings, she probably is already wanting to be like big brother or sis!

• If her preschool will allow, see if she can bring a lovey or special cuddly friend for naptime that will remind her of home.

• If you can, see if you can introduce her to her teachers before you have to leave her at school for the first time.

• If you know other kids that are going to be in classroom, see if you can arrange for playdates ahead of time so there will be some familiar faces in class.
