13 Weeks: Mindful Nesting

broomI know it’s only been seven days since last I wrote… but I seriously feel like I could write a novel this week. Chapters? They would be:

Chapter 1: Things my hubby and I are talking about

Chapter 2: Things I am thinking about

Chapter 3: Things I am doing… already!@#@ to prepare for our babies

You get the picture. It’s this last chapter, the “doing” one that freaks me out a little. I’m just one foot in the door into second trimester and apparently I am nesting (or some warped version of nesting there of.)

Nesting Like Alan Greenspan

Does balancing the check book down to the penny for the first time in ever count? I think so. What possessed me yesterday, I will not know, but I am blaming it on hormones. I had to have our Quickbooks account in perfect harmony with our online banking reports for the first time in years. I’ve always monitored transactions monthly, making sure we really did buy this or that, that our paychecks which are on automatic deposit really do magically appear mid and end of month, etc. But balancing the checkbook to the penny? Ha. No. Not even in my other pregnancies. It took a double dose of preparing for our upcoming bundle(s) of joy to bring me to this edge. Preparing… obsessing… same diff.

Nesting Like the Burger Meister

I have also been “on” the toy situation in our home over the past week, reclaiming the area at the top of our steps by banishing nearly four tubs of stuffed animals, pretend kitchen wear and dress up clothes to the playroom that is our basement. I have found over the years that kids and toys are much like ivy… fast growing and with a tendency to sprawl… both respond nicely to pruning. I am not completely evil in my quest for order. My kids still have a wall of book shelves in this area full of the toys they are playing with MOST lately, namely art supplies, books and anything baby doll including a renewed interest in all things American Doll. It warms my heart to see good ‘ole Samantha and Elizabeth getting some play, not to mention the handmade clothes they have ala my husband Shawn’s super crafty-and-talented-in-all-things-handy-work Mama. I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before, but I scored when it came to the mom-in-law department. More on this week 34 when you will find me begging said mom-in-law to buy herself a plane ticket to St. Louis for a few months of baby holding and laundry.

Nesting Like What Not to Wear

Today I will tackle my closet. Moving out the clothes I no longer fit into comfortably anymore as well as the ones that only stand another week or two before my expanding middle will make them a thing of the past. This does NOT include my jeans. I will cling to my pre-pregnancy jeans, zipper down, belly band around as long as I can before surrendering these puppies.

Finally, WERE I to write a book on the doing mode I seem to find myself in at the moment, I would mention that my prenatal yoga class is set to start in just a couple weeks. Shweew. I would also include this next section (lest I completely lose my center.)

Nesting Like Thich Nhat Hanh

On nesting, I think the very wise Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, teacher, author, and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh might offer these words to us… “At any moment, you have a choice, that either leads you closer to your spirit or further away from it.” Ahhhh. So true, so true. Each moment a choice. Breathing.

On nesting then, my final word… let’s get prepared, yes… but let’s also remember to breathe, to stay present to the awesome miracle of life-in-motion that is occurring in and around us even now… dirty baseboards, cluttered closets, unpainted nurseries and all.
